Since his first appearance in PIN–UP in 2018 alongside Jonathan Olivares, the Texas-born Lisbon-based multi-hyphenate Kanu has expanded his practice beyond art and design to encompass exhibition-making, film, music, and more.

For PIN–UP 40, Kanu packed a van with works from his studio and drove south to the Portuguese city of Lagos. The coastal town shares its name with Nigeria's largest city, where Kanu's family is from, but it's also the port from which the first enslaved Africans were brought to Europe in 1444. Here, Kanu is photographed by Jim C. Nedd in front of a lighthouse painted the colors of the Nigerian flag.
