The 114-year-old Italian design company Poltrona Frau has long built its reputation on an enduring mastery of leather and craftsmanship, creating iconic furniture while extending its know-how across its three core dimensions—residential, in motion and custom interiors—through automotive, yachting, aviation and the contract sector, including bespoke projects for theaters, auditoriums and public spaces. Across its collections, leather becomes a medium of experimentation, capable of being perforated, folded, digitally printed, and brought to life through a distinct color spectrum. Few pieces demonstrate this better than Jean-Marie Massaud’s Archibald armchair. Introduced in 2009, the design has since become a contemporary classic, repeatedly proving both its formal adaptability and its capacity to serve as a canvas for the brand’s evolving technical and aesthetic lexicon.

This year, the Archibald has become the subject of yet another incarnation, in collaboration with the veteran American street artist Shepard Fairey. Working since the late 1980s (“Obey Giant”), Fairey built a reputation through guerrilla-style graphics before achieving wide-spread recognition with his now-canonical 2008 HOPE portrait of Barack Obama. It marked the artist’s entry into mainstream consciousness and turned him into a defining creative figure of the early 21st century.

Delicate Balance, Fairey’s version of the Archibald, sheathes the shapely armchair in a hybrid of motifs drawn from his four-decade-long career. There is the ornamented geometry of florals and graphic patterns, propaganda-inspired iconification (a bird and Mother Nature/Marianne from his Make Art Not War series), and a highly controlled palette of shades of blue, red, and yellow.

The printing is what makes this collaboration especially significant for Poltrona Frau, as it allows the company to show off its patented Pelle Frau® ColorSphere Impact Less leather, digitally printed in multiple color layers and enriched with 3D embossing that echoes the effect of Fairey’s work. It also emphasizes Poltrona Frau’s commitment to some of the most sustainable tanning practices in the industry — an aspect that was important to the artist. “I was inspired by Poltrona Frau’s beautiful designs and expert craftsmanship, but we also aligned on respecting and preserving the beauty of Mother Nature,” says Fairey. The limited edition project (200 pieces made) also extends beyond symbolism through a partnership with the platform Treedom, which supports tree-planting initiatives worldwide.

Delicate Balance isn’t Poltrona Frau’s first collaboration of this kind. Previous partners in reimagining existing pieces from its collection include digital artist Felipe Pantone and Milanese icon Fornasetti. But the Fairey project is an indication of Poltrona Frau’s increasing engagement with contemporary image culture, where an armchair becomes both collectible and a media surface in the 21st-century attention economy. “It’s our commitment to exploring new creative languages while remaining rooted in craftsmanship, cultural dialogue, and respect for the natural world,” states CEO Nicola Coropulis. It’s a delicate balance, but one Poltrona Frau is clearly starting to master — one numbered edition at a time.
